District 7040 Interact Mission to El Salvador, March 9 - 21, 2005

DAY 1: Thursday, March 10th, 2005

Today was a long and hectic day which seemed to go on forever. Anyone who has ever traveled knows that, spending an entire day at the airport can seem never ending. Fortunately, after finally arriving in El Salvador, all the tension which we had seemed to vanish because things started picking up and we are now having an awesome time.

We met at General Vanier school last night to pack all the donated goods. We had so much fun while packing and bonding with each other. Many suitcases had trouble closing, but with our innovative ways of thinking we came up with the idea to sit on the suitcases which showed to be a brilliant idea.

There was such an abundance of donated goods that much of it will be shipped down by a container later on, during the summer.

The flights were long and many of us tried to sleep. We managed to make it to El Salvador, all present and in good health;except for 13 missing suitcases (which will be returned soon). We arrived in San Salvador tired, hot, and excited. Our fist glimpse of El Salvador made us forget all about our lack of sleep and change of climate. As soon as we saw the palm trees swaying in the breeze, we got our second wind and had a ball.

Everyone thought El Salvador was beautiful, as we arrived at the Happy House Hotel ready to begin our journey. We were welcomed by a Rotarian from Rotario Cuscatlan, with a box of traditional Salvadorian food. We spent some time settling in and then we soon began sorting out all the donated goods. We then took a pizza break and right after, of course, went right back to sorting out all our goods. After a long, exhausting and wonderful day, we are ready for a well deserved good nights sleep.
