DAY 1: Friday, March 10th, 2006Very early morning! We were getting prepared for the hot climate because we were all sweating pretty good. At Dorval Sean´s parents picked up all the winter coats for safe keeping. Fortunately, the entire crew passed through the checks in the airport with ease. With mingled feelings of excitement and nervousness, we stepped into the Boeing 737. Having no REAL sleep, some of us took the opportunity and peacefully slept in the plane, while the more unfortunate others sitting near the restrooms were constantly disturbed. 3 and a half hours later we arrived at Miami, HOT, HOT, HOT. Many seemed restless, as borrowing Sean´s own words, sleeping in a plane can make you more tired. We also met our leader, Ligia Corredor. She warmly welcomed us with her big smile! It was the final leg of the journey, Miami to El Salvador. With excitement, many of us were still able to sleep the length of the 3 hour flight. We were anxiously awaiting the heat, the sunshine, and this new experience. In El Salvador we met our Rotarian guides, Gerardo, Lucy and Doris, who brought us to our buffet lunch. Much of the scenery here is breathtaking, mountains of green, palm trees, sugar cane… You then see the poverty on the street which really hits you, Women with buckets on their heads, children begging for you to buy their water bottles and soft drinks, the wooden huts… As you near the capital city San Salvador, all this changes. San Salvador is a true Metropolis with bustling movement, constant traffic and big malls. We finally arrived at our hotel. Hotel Happy House! Seeing beds and a shower were definitely a welcome after more than 24 hours being awake! Soon we will be off to work, sorting out goods for tomorrow.
