District 7040 Interact Mission to El Salvador, March 10 - 20, 2006

DAY 5: Monday, March 14, 2006

Let´s start off by saying that we got to sleep in until 7! Today was more of a touring day as we went to two museums and the market.

The first museum was the Anthropological museum. We learnt all about what was discovered here in El Salvador, with objects dating back over 7000 years. It was very interesting to learn how El Salvador has changed over time in terms of agriculture, religion, and the Spanish conquest of the natives over a seven year period. El Salvador was the only country that was able to resist the Spaniards from taking over the country for over two years.

We then went to the art museum. We didn´t visit the whole museum but got to see the main hall. It was a guided tour whereby we got a chance to learn about Salvadorian artist and there interpretations of the civil war that ended in 1992.

The highlight of the day was shopping (ugh). We got to go to an outlet center where they sold excess of brand name clothing for 15$ or less. What excitement! We then went off to the market, which was fun! It was a handicraft market so we got to buy locally made products and bargain. Most brought back at least one hammock as a memory and some bought even more (in other words Jen buying 3 hammocks and a chair!) The El Salvadorian products are different and interesting.

We had the best supper of the trip so far…Chinese Food!! Let´s just hope that there won´t be any surprises from this later!
