| District 7040 Interact Mission to El Salvador, March 10 - 20, 2006 |
DAY 9: Saturday, March 18th, 2006For the past few days we worked the work of our lives. We´ve been exhausted, dirty, and emotionally weary, but today we were obliged to pull out our best efforts one last time. 430 a.m – the morning wake is awfully early. With sore limbs and stiff necks, one by one, we all head to Carlos´ bus. Somehow Carlos is always smiling. =) No surprise – most of the students instantly return to their sweet dreams as they find their seats. After a long three hours drive to San Miguel Hospital - the destination of our 2nd medical journey – we arrive, and find no traces of morning dews or any other hint of moisture. We now enter the 40 degrees Celsius zone. While some patiently counted hundreds of donated medicines, some busily provided entertainment for the kids with paint and soccer balls. Despite the sizzling temperature, we eventually managed to pull out another successful project, which was warmly appreciated by the staff and residents of San Miguel. As such, throughout the mission, the numerous human-to-human interactions with the El Salvadorians helped shape ourselves as humanitarian workers, not just only interact students. Tonight, a farewell party was held Lisset´s house, where we reflected on the past 9 short, but important days of our lives. Pushing behind the memories of the difficult times we´ve been through throughout the trip, we thoroughly enjoyed a last dance with the local Interactors. During the party, we also celebrated Jin´s 18th birthday – in 2 weeks advance – in four different languages, including English, French, Spanish, and Korean. The party concluded with a summary of the trip by Amanda and Jen, a formal sharing of thanks and congratulations, and an awards ceremony. It was especially delightful to hear that many donations to the Cuscatlan Rotary club have been inspired by our work here. Thanks to all who provided us with this fantastic experience. So the journey – at least the work – concludes here. We will be rewarded with one full day of rest at Gerardo and Doris´ beach house tomorrow. Representing Room 1, Jin Choi
