DAY 6: Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

G'day from the Alamo

After a pretty strenuous day yesterday, today seemed tougher than usual. Getting off to an early start around 6:30, we slowly got out of bed (cough Erin cough) and ate breakfast. We then returned to the school where we had been painting the mural, although since it was a school day, there were no children there to greet us. We got started right away finishing Peter Pan and fellow characters, while some of us began painting the classrooms.

Throughout the day, more children joined us and made the work more exciting. We were lucky to have met a young artist named Carlos, who first showed us a sketch he had made to prove his artistic ability. He was very enthusiastic about helping us, and we insisted he add Tinkerbell to our mural (which turned out beautifully).

At the end of the day, the mural was all finished and three of the classrooms had been painted. We are also planning on hopefully returning tomorrow to paint more classrooms. After clean-up, we drove back to the hotel to get ready for the Rotaract meeting.

Once at the club, a few of us went swimming and participated in various diving competitions (Tanner seems to think he won). After a pleasant meal, we joined the Salvadorian rotaractors and watched a slideshow presentation regarding some of the programs they take part in. They also quizzed us on our knowledge of the Salvadorian culture with an “El Salvador Citizenship Test.” We followed up with some chatting and hand slapping games, and then finally returned to the Alamo (our “home”).
