District 7040 Interact Mission to El Salvador, March 6 - 17, 2008

DAY 2: Friday, March 7th, 2008

The group started bright and early and woke up at 6:00 AM to a wonderful egg and papaya breakfast. After a short emotion sharing meeting, we loaded the bus at 8:20AM to find that there was not enough seats for everybody to sit. But no worries, our driver Carlos installed two more seats and we set off for a scenic trip towards Chalatenago. The group had its first glimpse at rural El Salvador. After passing the breath taking Lake Sugican, we got lost. But once again, Carlos came to the rescue, and skillfully backed down the mountain through the narrow streets of a village.

Approximately 3 hours after departure, we arrived at San Luis del Carmen school. There we were greeted like celebrities and were treated to traditional dances and pupusas. We spent a little bit of time with the children and then left and stopped at a local gas station called Texaco. A few ice cream cones later, it was back on the highway and headed for Santa Ana.

We visited the wonderful national theatre, Teatro de Santa Ana, a cathedral, and a painted school of talented young and more experienced painters. We were also treated to delicious local ice cream. For $0.60, you could get a little ice cream cone of exotic flavors from El Sin Rival.

We drove back to the hotel to freshen up and take a break, before leaving 45 minutes later for a local rotary member's house at 8:00PM. Sandra Levinsohn, our hostess, spoiled us with a delicious buffet of pupusas with sauerkraut salsa, cakes and beverages. Several local interact members from last night also met us there, and we played an intense game of Spanish Pictionary. At about 10:15PM, the exhausted group loaded the bus after saying goodnight to our friends, and headed back to the hotel to prepare for our painting of an orphanage tomorrow. Our Sponge Bob murals tomorrow will warm the walls of the building for about 17 students. But we'll leave that story for tomorrow night's journal.

Goodnight from everyone here, we are having a wonderful time. Adios!
