DAY 3: Saturday, March 8th, 2008We all got to sleep in this morning, an extra 30 minutes. For breakfast we had another interesting juice: watermelon! Followed by eggs, jocote (a very interesting and delicious fruit), refried beans, fried plantains. After the delicious food we headed to the bus around 7:30 to leave for the orphanage. Seventeen children and several adults greeted us at Puerta del Amor. It didn't take long to fall in love with all the children, and get covered in paint. The mural space was twelve metres long and five metres high. Blue paint went up on the entire wall and splattered most of us. Spongebob and his companions were quickly outlined and then it was time for a break. Ten pizzas arrived for the whole group of us and were devoured in no time. Once everyone's stomachs were filled it was back to work. All the children took part in painting the characters and painting one another. While some were busy in the hot sun painting, others relaxed in the shade: colouring in books and drawing on one another with markers. A few people out of the group took a little road trip up to Divina Providencia (a non-profit hospital) to deliver receiving blankets and newborn clothing. There the group met a wonderful nun named Sor Cecilia. She is originally from Belgium and came to El Salvador with her nephew to build her dream. This is her thirty-fifth year here and her dream has certainly come true. The group was a little late returning to the orphanage, but the others were glad as they got to spend more time with the children. The goodbyes were emotional. Everyone received numerous hugs. Then it was back on the bus to go and wash the paint off of the bodies in order to be decent for dinner. Everyone managed to be ready and on the bus in time. An interesting ride was in store for all of us. Our destination was a restaurant on top of a mountain! The ride was an amazing experience as we all got to see the skyline of El Salvador at night. Before we left, we were told that it was going to be about 18ºC. Well this was fine as long as wit wasn't going to be windy. With the wind chill it was about 4ºC. Yes, in El Salvador it can get that cold. We all froze for the first twenty minutes until we got used to the temperature. It was actually nice for a change. Dinner was absolutely amazing. Chicken, veggies and some fried eggplant covered the table. Everyone was happy to get back onto the warm bus. The medical clinic is going to be tomorrow and some more interesting experiences are sure to come. Today's ventures brought to you by: Amanda and Lauren (Room 7) |
