| District 7040 Interact Mission to El Salvador, March 6 - 17, 2008 |
DAY 6: Tuesday, March 11th, 2008Today we slept in until 8:45 a.m., but we were still really late when we left. For breakfast we ate pupusas stuffed with beans and cheese and drank fresh juice (watermelon with orange). At 10:00 a.m. we arrived at the Canadian Embassy, where we had to clear security. The Ambassador, Stephanie Allard-Gomez, was amazing. She told us about emigration from El Salvador to the United States. She also told us about the serious gang problems in El Salvador and the solutions that Canada is proposing. After one hour, we left the Canadian Embassy and went to the Mercado de Artezanias de la Feria Internacional market. The market had many wonderful items: bracelets, hammocks, machetes and much more. At 2:00 p.m., we went to Pollo Campero, a popular fast-food chicken restaurant. After eating, we journeyed to the San Salvador Volcano, where we hiked to the top. The volcano was mildly disappointing because there was no red-hot lava. The volcano was basically a massive crater at the top of a mountain. There were many El Salvadorian children that helped us find our way around the volcano and gave us beautiful flowers. Around 5:30 p.m., we headed to the Galaria mall. On the bus ride, we sang an incredible one-hundred verse rendition of “The Song that Never Ends” at the agonizing expense of the chaperones. At the mall, we had supper in the food court and ate delicious ice cream. We then went to the Interact and Rotaract meeting at Club Arabe, where we heard about the projects that the El Salvador Interact/ Rotaract groups are participating in.
