District 7040 Interact Mission to El Salvador, March 6 - 17, 2008

Day 7 - Wednesday March 12, 2008

Hola everyone in the north!

After they dragged us out of bed, breakfast was really good, as usual, this morning it included mango. The bus ride to our work site in San Jose Villanueva (Los Naranjos) was exhilarating and full of laughter thanks to Lombardo. We worked with the locals on 5 different houses. Two of the houses are now compete, paint and all. The other three houses are finally finished having the cracks all cemented. Hanna and Barb painted a Little Mermaid mural on the school's water tank. It turned out great. We bought books for the school and we gave them many various school supplies. We also gave the local kids shoes and clothing. We were all especially happy to see the boys who played soccer with us on Monday receive shoes. We wouldn't be surprised to see them in major league soccer one day. Later, in the late afternoon we all climbed back into the pickup to get back to the bus so we could head to Club Salvadoreņo. Otto, Milton, and Elias were there to meet us. This club is on the Pacific Ocean and the beach there, called Zunzal, is famous world wide for its great waves for surfing. Everyone broke a record for the fastest changing time and jumped in right away. The next thing we knew there were 8 foot waves crashing down on us. The white foam is the only reminder of all the snow we left behind. It was the first time for many of us to swim in the Pacific and a first to see black sand beaches. After our swim we all relaxed and watched the beautiful sun set over the ocean. We had a relaxing evening and some of us played soccer in the parking lot while others watched the waves and just relaxed for the first time.
