| District 7040 Interact Mission to El Salvador, March 6 - 17, 2008 |
Day 8 - Thursday March 13, 2008This morning, the Interact students were treated to a rare sleep-in: an incredible 7:30AM. After a short and sweet breakfast of frosted flakes topped with bananas and frambouesas (local raspberries picked from the largest volcano in El Salvador), we packed the bus and left to get groceries. Once the bus was packed full of chips, drinks and goodies, we left for the Lago Coatepeque in Santa Anna, a lake at the top of its active volcano. We stayed at the private beach villa for an hour where we tanned and swam to our hearts delight's, in the ACTIVE volcano. However, the stay was too short, and we left for Chalchuapa, the nearby village, after picking up 21 pizzas for lunch from Pizza Hut for lunch at the orphanage. Upon arrival at the orphanage Obra Social Maria Auxiliandora, our driver Carlos honoured us with an incredible display of driving prowess by backing in to the tiny orphanage driveway, we had lunch and presented the nuns in charge of the incredible establishment with a $2000 donation towards their trades program, and additional money for the sponsorship of 23 girls in the orphanage. The girls' trade program includes making piņatas, growing hydroponic plants, and sewing. We danced and played with the girls, by participating in local dances and limbo. We gave out our donations, and after Simon parted with his giant monkey (Jorje), we left for the hotel as the bus was bombarded with goodbyes and kisses for Jimmy and Simon (not even kidding). J After an hour to wash up, the bus left the hotel at 7:00PM, and headed for the Hotel Radisson, where we were amazed by the most luxurious hotel most of us have ever seen. The live Jazz, clean washrooms, gorgeous fountains and expert waiting staff made us all feel flattered about our visit. We met with the local Rotarians in the Salon Caribe conference room where we had supper and presented the Rotarians with certificates of recognition and gratitude. After desert, we headed home in good spirits and feeling refreshed and ready for a good night sleep. But, there is no rest for Jimmy and Simon, as we had to write tonight's journal while the others finalized tomorrow's donations and plans for the trip's final monetary donations. P.S. We swan in an active volcano!!! Brought to you by: Jimmy & Simon |
