Day 9, Friday, March 14, 2008We started the day to a 6:30am wake up call. Breakfast consisted of French toast and papaya. At 7:45 we left the hotel with suitcases of clothing and the Barney piņata that we got from the girls orphanage. On our way we stopped at a bank, a hardware store and a grocery store to pick up the supplies we needed for the day as well as some candy to stuff the piņata with. We arrived in San Jose Villanueva and loaded the supplies onto the truck and took our last chance at a flush toilet. We arrived at the village and spilt into three painting teams. Unfortunately one of the homes had not been worked on while we were gone and had to be cemented more. The remaining two houses were painted inside and out by 2pm. The groups gathered at the unpainted house to find that the group had finished and the house was ready to be painted. Again we ran into some problems. The owners of the house were not there and had not left instructions on what color to paint the house. We were stuck wondering what to do when a man who had been helping said that his house hadn't been painted yet. We decided that we would finish his house. With almost all the team members and some of the villagers we were able to paint the entire house in a record one hour and fifteen minutes! Some of the other members of the team skipped clean up and started to give donations away and stuff Barney with the candy. After every thing was picked up and put in to the truck and all the donation were given away Barney was set up. The kids had a hard time trying to hit Barney while blind folded and while he was being moved to different height. In the end Barney's candy was devoured by the kids. We loaded our selves onto the truck and headed out. When we arrived in the town we were surprised to see that the village was putting on a lent ceremony. We loaded the bus and headed to the hotel. Quickly we cleaned the paint off our skin and headed to supper where we were to be joined by some Rotarians. We ate at a Mexican Restaurant called Villa Maria. We were served large platters of fried shrimp, chicken, and beef, which we shared amongst several people. Afterwards we left for the hotel and went to bed. Lauren and Amanda |
