| District 7040 Interact Mission to El Salvador, March 6 - 17, 2008 |
Day 10, Saturday, March 15, 2008Our second medical clinic was today. We had an early start of 6:00am and a breakfast of chicken fingers and fries before we finished packing up our donations. We drove to the town of Izalco where our clinic was set up at a local community center and church. A turnout of over 250 people kept the whole team busy counting pills, handing out donations and entertaining the local children. The clinic lasted from about 9 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon in the blistering 38C heat. Part way through the morning, a number of students departed from the clinic and headed to the Agape Association (a self supporting community) in Sonsonate to distribute donations of toiletries, baby blankets, baby clothes and other materials for the elderly, babies, and young mothers in the Associations' many hospitals and medical wards. After the clinic at Izalco was finished, the whole group returned to Agape to eat lunch at their restaurant; Dona Laura, run by the association. The restaurant is a part of Agape's fundraising program to support its hospitals, nursing homes, and many programs that it offers. After lunch we all headed to a lookout on one of the volcanoes for an amazing view of the region and its other surrounding volcanoes. Unfortunately, the weather turned out to be cloudy and the view was not quite as impressive as usual. After our quick visit at the lookout we headed to the town of Conception de Ataco for a last trip to some outdoor markets. After an hour of shopping and a few more purchases we all got back on the bus and began the drive back to San Salvador. About an hour and a half into the drive, we ran into somewhat of a roadblock when traffic was stopped to clean up from an accident that had happened that afternoon. The only car involved was totally destroyed after having left the road and fallen down a small drop. From what we heard, the driver was fortunately O.K. As soon as we finished our drive and arrived back at the hotel, we changed and got back on the bus to head for our much awaited soccer game at a local field. We split ourselves up into teams after being joined by Otto and a number of local Interactors. After a fun filled hour we headed back to the hotel where we finally ate our pizza dinner at 10:30 before a team meeting to sort out our monetary donations which will be handed out tomorrow night at our goodbye party. After a long but fulfilling day we finally washed up and went to bed to rest up for another fun filled day tomorrow Fraser and Billy, Room 1 |
