| District 7040 Interact Mission to El Salvador, 11-22 March, 2010 |
DAY 5: Tuesday, March 16th, 2010Today we got to sleep in till 8! We had mouth watering pupusas, the traditional El Salvadorian food filled with cheese and beans, for breakfast. The chaperone went to a local Rotarian meeting. Around 10 we loaded the bus to head to the Artisans market. We bought all sorts of nick-knacks including hand made purses, hammocks, jewellery, shoes, coffee, pottery, and traditional clothing. We got some good deals by bargaining. When we couldnīt carry any more, we headed off to lunch at a nearby mall. After eating we met with the Canadian Ambassador of El Salvador, Claire Poulin. She inspired many of us to go into international relations, and widened our prospectives. Then we set off to the San Salvador Volcano to Zip-line down, as a "surprise" for Sarah Riendeauīs 18th birthday! We got to ride on the back of a truck up to the beginning of the course. We went through nine lines, each with breathtaking views. Sarah was courageous enough to go first, and also because it was her birthday. On the contrary, Jensen was reluctant to go down due to his fear of heights, but went anyways and screamed like a girl. Afterwards, we headed to The Buffalo Wings for dinner. Some of us ordered 911 spicy wings and ran to the bathroom with burning mouths. Being in the restaurant reminded us of home. Right after the main course, singing waiters (in both English and Spanish) brought out a glittery tweety cake for Sarahīs birthday. She was covered with chocolate icing by the end of the night. We finished dinner at around 10:30 and were told that we had to wake up at 5:30 to paint 4 houses at Sans Jose Villanueva-las Veraneras. We did not go to bed till late because of the preparations we had to make for tomorrow. 5 more days :( Sarah and Tracy |
